In central Africa, iboga (Tabernanthe Iboga) has long been used as a ceremony and medicine. According to mythology, the pygmies who lived in the jungle first noticed it when they saw gorillas, hogs, and porcupines eating the root. The Bwiti use a high dose of iboga once in a lifetime during an initiatory rite. The goal of this initiation is to enable participants to communicate with their ancestors and travel to the spirit realm in order to obtain life guidance.
