Diacetylmorphine, sometimes known as pure heroin, is a white, bitter-tasting powder that is abused for its euphoric effects. The opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum) contains the morphine alkaloid, which is the source of heroin, a highly addictive substance that is typically two to three times more strong than morphine. Typically, it is snorted up the nose, smoked, or injected. It has euphoric (“rush”), anxiolytic, and analgesic effects.
